Malibu Orchid Society

The Malibu Orchid Society, Inc. (MOS) was formed to provide a setting where orchid devotees could meet to share their enthusiasm and knowledge, assist one another with orchid culture, and learn from invited experts. Members are mainly from Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, and West Los Angeles, but all are welcome. What we all have in common is a love of orchids and a desire for orchid knowledge. MOS welcomes visitors at their monthly meetings.

MOS was founded in 1965, and incorporated on 25 June 1969 as a non-profit corporation. It is an affiliate of the American Orchid Society (AOS) and the California Garden Clubs, Inc. There are currently about 250 active members.

Meetings are held the third Tuesday of every month (except December) at 7:00 p.m. at the Pacific Palisades Women’s Club (901 Haverford Ave, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272). They include a short session on orchid culture, and a main speaker. Members can choose to have dinner with the speaker before the meeting. After the main presentation there are refreshments and judging of orchids that members have brought in for display. There is a silent auction and a raffle with a large array of desirable orchids. Members can confer with the experts and borrow books from our extensive library.

MOS is an award-winning participant in the annual Santa Barbara Orchid Show, the Southland Orchid Show, and the Malibu Art Festival. Members design and execute the displays and lend their plants for these occasions. We also hold a very successful annual orchid auction, open to the public. There is an annual organized overnight bus trip to see special collections and nurseries in areas outside of Los Angeles and a day when selected MOS members welcome visitors to their greenhouses and outdoor orchid gardens. In addition, members have a marvelous summer party, as well as a festive holiday banquet each year.

Members receive the informative MOS bulletin monthly, which lists topics for the next meeting, the plant forum ribbon awards, informative articles, calendar of Southern California orchid shows and events, and other items of interest to orchid lovers.

Welcome New Members!

Visitors are welcome to attend 3 meetings before becoming members. Annual dues are $25 for an individual member and $30 for two individuals at the same address. Membership starts in January. Members joining in July pay 1/2 annual dues; memberships of those joining October-December extend through the following year.

Members are mainly from Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, and West Los Angeles, but all are welcome. What we all have in common is a love of orchids and a desire for additional knowledge about orchids.

You may join MOS by signing up with Membership Secretary Marianne Lu at a meeting, or via mail by downloading the application form.

As a member you will receive a Membership Roster, get MOS library privileges, be able to ask questions at our "Beginners' Corner", have hybrid parentage identified by our president, Spring Verity, have the opportunity to be on the Board of Directors, and vote on matters regarding the Society.

Wearing your membership nametag at the monthly meetings will enable you to participate in a drawing to be the first to select an orchid from the raffle table (without a raffle ticket).

Members receive the informative MOS Bulletin monthly, which lists topics for the next meeting, the Plant Forum Ribbon Awards, informative articles, a calendar of area orchid events, and other items of interest to orchid lovers.

You will also receive a membership survey form so that your specific interests and needs can be considered. Members who volunteer meet and interact with other experienced members, as well as being awarded, at the end of the year, with a free orchid plant.
